These words are "I Think, Therefore I Am," or as seen in his works, "Cogito, ergo sum." Descartes is also known for his thoughts on voluntarism, among many other philosophical concepts. In regards to his infamous "I Think, Therefore I Am," many assume that it is an infallible truth. But, many, upon closer examination, find weaknesses in this statement. As is the case with any philosophical examination, there are always numerous ways in which to examine statements and claims. In the following paper we devote the majority of the space to examining some of the strengths and weaknesses of Descartes claim. The paper then briefly defines voluntarism and examines Descartes Meditations as they relate to the concept. I Think Therefore I Am Many people ask what Descartes meant by his remark "Cogito, ergo sum." And, there are many ways to examine the exact meaning of this particular phrase. Bearing that in mind we present one authors understanding of the statement, an understanding that is fairly universal and greatly informative. This author states that, "The key point that Descartes makes in The Search for Truth is that the meditator is doubting everything by the end of the First Meditation, and that this doubting is essentially a form of thinking; thus in doubting, he is thinking, and it must be true that he exists" (Anonymous Topic 2 - "Cogito, ergo sum", 2002; cogito.html). The point is that an individual cannot doubt that they are thinking, and thinking is a very different act than other physical acts.
