before the enlightenment would take shape. He delved into subject matter many did not dare. Although religious, he did not rely on faith to corral his belief in Gods existence.
Rather, he seemed to need further logical proof. He was however able to devise a proof that God exists. Although many applaud Descartes, there are many critics
as well. Some contend that his approaches to rational thinking and ideas about existence are not really all that significant and Descartes really only made significant contributions to the field
of mathematics. Others take quite the opposite point of view. For example, Devlin (1997) is a major critic and suggests that Cartesian thought will never really solve any problems. He
is not alone in this idea. One can say that there are flaws in Descartes theorems. At the same time, Rene Descartes is a noted philosopher and had been a
wonderful teacher throughout his life. If he had done anything well, it is to provoke thought. Yet, his contributions to mathematics and logic are important and complement the works of
many other philosophers who would come later in history. Descartes has seemingly made a name for himself and while he has his critics, his reputation and fame has never been
truly compromised. He has added a great deal in terms of thought in a variety of disciplines. Yet, there is argument as to what his legacy should be. Should it
be in the realm of mathematics or science, or should it be in the area of philosophy? Most construe the answer to go to the latter. In fact, when evaluating
