that there are two types of reality. These are different substances, the first is the element of thought, which originates with the mind, the second is extension or matter. The
argued that in the universe we know that there is thought and matter. The paradigm that is dualism is a single idea; why should reality need to be only one
of these aspects. In duality there is the argument that the ideas of the mind, and that the physical world of the matter are both equally real. Therefore, both the
mind and the body are real. In the middle of the sixth medication he states "Its certain, then, that I am really distinct from my body and can exist without
it". The basic concept is that because he can perceive himself being separate from his body, this means that he believes that his soul is not dependant on the physical
body (Collinson, 2002). The foundation of the argument is that Descartes has cause to doubt his senses, having found that his senses can be misled; meaning that one
cannot rely on their senses. He also puts forward the argument that it is possible to dream anything that he can sense, which he uses to argue that the senses
are not based in the physical world. This is also supported by his argument that madmen may experience faulty sensory perception. Contrastingly, in the first meditation Descartes also states that
he understands reason, as this is independent of the physical world, and it is this that can create the clearest metal image. Other arguments are out forward to support
