The following paper examines one of those thematic images; the sea swift. Derek Walcotts "Omeros" and the Sea Swift The sea swift is an ocean bird that is found
in a great many places in the world. It is the bird that is essentially used to introduce us to the character of Achilles in the epic: "He was lured
by the swift. . . . this mite of the sky-touching sea/ towing a pirogue a thousand times her own weight with a hummingbirds electric wings (Walcott 130)" (Bradley). There
is a very powerful sense of imagery in this as we see a small bird that is thin, a bird with thin pointy wings almost, flying swiftly (as the name
implies) and overcoming great physical or biological conditions as it flies and is victorious in its presence. Being that it is related to the hummingbird we can see this relationship
because it is often noted that hummingbirds should not really be able to fly because of their small wings. This offers us an understanding of having the ability to do
things that are considered impossible and as such this bird clearly represents overcoming all odds for success. There is also a sense that this particular bird is the symbol
of spiritual guidance in the story for it is always there as a symbol, and it is not just in one location, but in many, seeming following Achilles to Africa
and all throughout Europe. It seems that everywhere he went there was a sea swift, giving him symbolic strength and foundation in worlds that seemed to always change due to
