view, though, it is necessary to relate major theories on aging, including both the Continuity Theory and Disengagement Theory and existing studies on depression. The Continuity Theory has been utilized
to support the view that elderly individuals often demonstrate a desire to maintain stability in their homelife, functional behaviors and interpersonal relationships. The Continuity Theory was developed as a
result of assessments of major changes in the population of elderly Americans and the belief that even in the midst of changing, functioning and social elements, this increasing population of
elderly Americans demonstrate consistency in terms of their conceptual perspectives, their activity levels, lifestyle and relationships (Atchley, 2002). In fact, though, theorists have also recognized that the continuity does
not suggest stasis, but instead continuity is based on an integration of flexibility that is allowable through a foundation of strong interpersonal relationships, anticipated behaviors and social connections (Atchley, 2002).
Continuity Theory is based on a substantial assumption that most people, throughout their lives, are able to live, learn and grow from their experiences, and that they are
able to evolve in a manner that is in correspondence with their desires (Atchley, 2002). At the same time, this learning takes place within a consistent personal base, and
continuity in conceptual perspectives and lifestyles are an imperative part of the process of adult development from the period of mid-life to the later years of life (Atchley, 2002).
