children and adolescents, depression is not quite as obvious. Yet, according to one study, depression affects about 1% of children and 5% of teenagers (Brent and Birmaher 667). Other sources
have noted that as many as 2.5% of children and 8.3% of adolescents are depressed ("Depression in Children and Adolescents"). When it comes to gender, it seems as if there
is an equal risk for children, but girls are more likely to be depressed than boys once they enter puberty (Brent and Birmaher 667). In fact, the rate can be
twice as high for females (Brent and Birmaher 667). What causes adolescent or childhood depression? Experts cannot pin down one particular cause and likely, depression emerges in respect to
a complex array of criteria. Some risk factors include a parent with depression, anxiety, having a chronic disease and undergoing a stressful life event (Brent and Birmaher 667). Other risk
factors include problems with the parent-child relationship and of course, if abuse or neglect exists, the probability of depression increases (Brent and Birmaher 667). When the problem is severe, suicide
can sometimes result. In fact, it is stated that "suicide is the third leading cause of death for 15-to-24-year-olds, and the sixth leading cause of death for 5-to-14-year-olds" ("Teen suicide").
Such statistics suggest that depression in childhood and adolescence can be very serious. II. Depression in Childhood and Adolescence First, it should be said
that in adolescents and children, one may not witness typical symptoms of depression such as sadness (Brent and Birmaher 667). In the commercial for Spring Awakening, one of the
