strange place that the adolescent is struggling to fit into. All of these realities make the potential for depression far greater for the adolescent than for perhaps any other age
group. In addition, we should note that "Experts say myths about teen behavior and ignorance about teen mental health have combined to blind society to teen mental illness. Parents, convinced
that moodiness, anti-social behavior and thoughts of suicide are par for the course for teen-agers, may overlook signs of serious mental illness," indicating depression and the adolescent is a very
serious concern, or should be (Sapmson, 2000; p. K3198). The Condition An organization known as Direct (Depression Information Resource & Education Centre) (1999) states that "Major depression is
common in adolescents - particularly in post-pubertal teenagers. Adolescent depression shares many of the features of major depression....however, there are some notable differences" (d2411.htm). This is due to the fact
that many adolescents do not recognize any of the signs of depression. It is a relatively new world, emotionally speaking, and as such the symptoms go unrecognized as a serious
issue. For example, Most adolescents, rather than communicate that they are experiencing a depressed mood, will more readily report feelings of "boredom, loss of interest or apathy. Irritability is also
a common mood manifestation of adolescent major depression" (Direct, 1999; d2411.htm). As for the physical symptoms of depression among adolescents, the young individuals are much more likely to suffer
