society. For some, escaping the grips of depression is all but impossible due to its genetic disposition; for others, environmental and/or psychosocial problems lend themselves to the onset and
sometimes persistent state of depression. Elderly women are no exception and in fact are a large percentage of those afflicted with depression due to a number of causes associated
with health, emotions and loss of independence (Barry et al, 2008). Classically, older adults deny being depressed, minimize the severity of symptoms, fail to recognize anhedonia or fatigue as
symptoms of depression, and hesitate to admit illness. In the most recent published study, Steffens and colleagues estimated the prevalence of major depression to be 4.4% in elderly women
and 2.7% in elderly men (Buckley et al, 2007, p. 34). II. RECOGNIZING THE SIGNS Growing old is an inevitable stage of
life that many women fight tooth and nail; for others, however, it represents a time free of responsibility and full of recreation. What causes such disparate perceptions has everything
to do with ones physical and mental well being, financial status and the ability to maintain a satisfactory home life. When the aforementioned variables are unsatisfactory, depression can occur
in a number of different ways. Major depressive disorder is identified by the presence of many severe episodes that typically manifest from chronic
- or dysthymic - depression (ICBS, 2004). Major depression is noted by myriad telltale symptoms, not the least of which include constant sadness, tearfulness, loss of interest or pleasure
in heretofore enjoyable things, appetite decline or increase without impact upon weight, trouble sleeping, agitation, restlessness, lack of energy, feelings of worthlessness, difficulty concentrating and suicidal thoughts (ICBS, 2004).
