way to lift peoples spirits. Sometimes people made the games themselves (jacks, for instance), but they often they played board games. In fact, "[P]arlor games and board games became the
rage. In 1935 Parker Brothers introduced the game of Monopoly and 20 thousand sets were sold in one week. (American cultural history, 2001). Monopoly Monopoly was the
brain child of Charles B. Darrow, who was a sales rep for an engineering firm (Game history, 2001). Like thousands of other people, Darrow lost his job and was forced
to try and support his family by doing odd jobs, such as repairing household items like irons; he even walked dogs (Game history, 2001). In 1934, he and his wife
discovered they were expecting their second child, and Darrow knew he had to increase the family income (Game history, 2001). Darrow and his wife had once taken a trip to
Atlantic City, and he remembered it very clearly. The image was so vivid, down to the street names, that he decided to design a board game based on Atlantic City
(Game history, 2001). He began by "drawing squares on a piece of tile, and adding colors to those squares with whatever paint he could find at the local hardware store"
(Game history, 2001). He then got the idea of allowing players to buy up the streets and businesses, and the name we know as Monopoly was born. There appears to
