situation of extreme difficulty for the social worker involved. But there are ways of helping such individuals and their families and the focus must necessarily be on what can
be done as opposed to the obvious limitations of the situation. In our post-September 11th society, deportation has taken on an entirely new
seriousness and reality for many living in the United States. Deportation is occurring at a record rate and in its wake many peoples lives are being forever altered.
Therefore, determining the problems that families face as a result of the deportation of a loved one and the means by which a social worker can help to restore some
semblance of order for those left behind is of the utmost importance and significance. For instance, consider the case of Iyaba
Mandingo who was arrested by the Stamford Police Department for deportation to his native Antigua on April 17th of this year (Masterson, 2003). Mandingo is a 33-year-old father, writer,
teacher and artist and while he waits in jail for his fate to be sealed, his wife and five children have undergone extreme emotional stress as a result of these
events (Masterson, 2003). The unfortunate reality is that in this particular situation, there are extenuating circumstances that make the deportation of
