they are, then, the money is well-spent. If they are not safer, then, it is a huge waste of money that could have been spent on other needs in the country. One of the problems with determining if the departments policies are successful is that they do not release information and data. In other words, they do not always announce that a terrorist attack was prevented on such and such a day. Sometimes they do release that information. On May 7, 2012, for instance, it was announced that another underwear bomber was caught and detained. Over the years, there have been scattered reports along the same lines but there is no score sheet that would tell Americans that policies have been successful and effective in stopping terrorist attacks on our land. Americans have become aggravated and frustrated with the increased security measures. Those implemented in airports are especially invasive and angering. The lines are long and all privacy is taken from citizens. Travelers especially wonder and, rightfully so, whether these extreme measures have really prevented any terrorist acts in the air. This essay will explain how the Department works and discuss some of the Departments practices and policies and report opinions regarding success or failure. The opinions are not in agreement with each other. Some believe the Department of Homeland Security has made a mess of everything while other believe their practices have led to a safer America.
