of asking these types of questions work so well in the classroom? The author responds: " The power of open-ended questions comes from the way these questions tap into that
natural cycle, inviting children to pursue their own curiosity about how the world works" (Denton, 2007, p. 2). It is a great idea as it fosters creativity, something that
is lacking in todays classroom. It further demonstrates that the child is learning by the response. Yes or no responses does not necessarily reveal whether or not the child truly
understands the reason behind the response. They may guess correctly or read the teachers body language. Of course, while the use of open-ended questions is a good idea, there
are drawbacks. One problem is that the student will go off on tangents. The author answers such objections by noting that boundaries should be clarified (Denton, 2007). Sometimes, open ended
questions can encourage competition but a teacher should discourage this type of thing as well (Denton, 2007). The author concludes the article as follows: "Open-ended questions power academic and social
learning. Such questions encourage Childrens natural curiosity, challenging them to think for themselves, and inviting them to share their view of the world. The result: engaged learners who are
motivated to learn and whose responses enlighten their classmates and their teacher" (Denton, 2007, p.4). While Dentons (2007) article is good, and the concept of using open-ended questions appears to
