quality of life for their clients. A national survey of dental hygienists conducted in 2004 found that these professionals view screening for oral cancer to be an important component
of their practice and that they possess comparable oral cancer knowledge to of the general dentist in private practice (Dental school 99). As this indicates, dental hygienists are among the
frontline health care professionals who aid the pubic in maintaining good health. Healthy teeth and gums are not simply an attractive asset but also are indicators of the overall health
of the individual and by aiding clients in maintaining their good oral hygiene, dental hygienists provide an invaluable healthcare service. A dental hygienist who has worked in this field
for close to three decades expressed an advantage of this profession well by saying, "I enjoy being a care-giver...I enjoy taking care of people and developing relationships and helping people
learn about their health" (Stineman). As this indicates, the role of dental hygienist allows for the professional to enjoy their contact with the public, developing therapeutic relationships. The work
