Essay / Research Paper Abstract
Dennett identified three prediction stances; the design stance, the physical stance and the intentional stance. This 7 page paper starts by examines these stances what they are and how they can be applied and also considers the aspect of beliefs, desires and rationality in the context of optimum choices within these 3 stances. intentional stance in more detail. The first is the design stance. It is argued that when we know the design of a computer then when instruction are given to
the computer by a programme then the outcome of these instruction should be predictable by reference to the design and its parameters (Dennett, 1981). The response is designed due
to the way it will follow the computational instructions (Dennett, 1981). The prediction made will be accurate as long as the operations take place as all takes place as it
is designed to do so, without any breakdown (Dennett, 1981). It is possible to look at various design stance predictions, but all have a commonality in the way that
they depend on the idea of function that is teleological or purpose relative (Dennett, 1981). System designs will categorise the parts into functional groups which may be bigger or
smaller functional components. The design stance prediction is based on the functional components each behaving as they are designed. Dennett uses the example of a radio, where a diagram will
show the different components which include the transistor, the capacitor and the resistor, each part has its own function, and when they operate together the functions of the radio can
be predicted (Dennett, 1981). The same reference may be seen as accurate is most mechanical or electronic good, from washing machines
and driers though to coffee makers and televisions. The prediction of the design stance for a computer works in the same way, the response of a computer at any given
level will be determined by the functional components of that system, all of which will have to operate correctly for the outcome to meet the prediction (Dennett, 1981).
