in the Southwest, your state is your country. There exists no other country outside that which you know. Likewise, neighborhood is a country. As your family is a country. As
your house is a country. As you are a country" (Chavez-Face of an Angel). Introduction Denise Chavez is considered to be one of the most prolific Latin American writers
of our time. Born in New Mexico she has written poetry, novels, childrens books, and plays. She is also a teacher, a performer, and one who involves herself in her
community. In light of such simple information one can surely imagine that she is an artist with a great deal to say, and also a woman with great skill. One
critic indicates that, "In all of her works one finds an authentic portrayal of her Chicano culture, bilingualism, and humor" (World Literature Today). Chavez work is primarily work that
opens up the doors for understanding and freedom in relationship to the Chicano female. The Chicano female, and her counterparts that are Mexican or Latino or otherwise of similar cultures,
have lived silently for centuries, accepting societys image of them. They have been passionate and dreamy women and they have been hopeful and silent women. In the work of Chavez
many stereotypes are laid open, simple working class people are illustrating with incredibly warm and loving depth, grandmothers are seen for who they are, and women are generally given a
voice they did not previously possess. The following essay first provides a biographical look at Denise Chavez and then goes on to examine and discuss her work and
her life, through her words and the critique of others. The paper then examines three of her novels and then discusses some of her other work, and work in progress.
