respect to how they behave. They may be odd or eccentric or harbor prejudices. They may fail to get along in society. In Flannery OConnors Everything that Rises Must Converge,
it seems that a boy coming of age, and his mother, are on a bus when two things occur: she is devastated by an illness and he is embarrassed at
his mothers behavior prior to the stroke she experiences. This is how the story begins, but this summary of the beginning provides a good sense of what the central themes
are. Thematic elements include health and heredity as well as racism. At the same time, the story is essentially about Julians mother. She is in denial about many things. She
is obese and will not really admit that the obesity is a problem. Also, she is a racist but does not see her attitudes as problematic. In essence, the author
paints a picture of someone who is seemingly normal but avoids truth and lives in her own little world. The story is driven by the presence of denial.
While that is the gist of the story-a woman succumbs to her health problem in public-- there is also race and racism involved. Julians mother takes center stage as
a black woman enters the bus wearing the same hat as his mother. While race certainly enters the picture, it is Julian who is on the road to self-discovery. In
part, it is a journey related to racial differences and the fact that he is white. In essence, his mothers behavior is at the center of what is occurring, but
it is the effect on Julian that is most profound. In a sense, there is a theme of denial from the outset. Julian never realized that his family life was
