lost in one sort of denial or another. There is the father, Willy, who is the primary character, but then there are his two sons and his wife. The following
paper examines how each of them is in a sort of state of denial about the realities of life at one point or another. Denial in "Death of
a Salesman" The character of Willy Loman obviously presents the reader or viewer with images of denial in many different aspects. He is a man lost in a world where
he thinks that through being a hard worker he will achieve everything his heart desires, that which involves the American Dream. One critic notes, " Miller charges America with selling
a false myth constructed around a capitalist materialism nurtured by the postwar economy, a materialism that obscured the personal truth and moral vision of the original American Dream described by
the countrys founders" (SparkNotes). Willy is in denial because he fell for a lie and it is not until the end that he realizes he was wrong. Willy is
also in denial about his sons, thinking they can be what he believes himself to be; a success. He also is in denial regarding his own manhood and his desirability
for he is having an affair and in this we see him denying he is aging, and denying he is not the success he thinks he is. In essence, his
denial of the truths in his life make him run from everything that is valid. And this denial leads to the perpetuation of the denial of his family members.
Willys wife, Linda, is in denial because she coddles her husband, making excuses for him and allowing him to be the man he is, with his false dreams and notions.
