and then suddenly find they cannot afford the lifestyle to which they have become accustomed. Others indulge themselves in bad habits--womanizing, drinking too much, doing drugs--and they somehow rationalize their
behavior, not realizing that they are engaged in destructive behavior. In fact, they believe that they are on the road to success. This inability to accept reality is a significant
character flaw. In life, as in literature, there are often characters who refuse to accept reality. Sometimes, it has to do with a lack of intelligence. It is why people
seem to follow trends, or "go with the flow." Some individuals do not navigate through life, they just allow it to happen, and they engage in behaviors they see others
engaging in. They just follow the masses and do not think about their lives very much. Other reasons for not facing reality sometimes has to do with mental illness. Schizophrenia
for example is a condition where individuals are not aware of reality. And then there is the ordinary person who just for no apparent reason does not face reality and
has a quiet nervous breakdown in the process. Arthur Millers Willy Loman, from Death of a Salesman, is such a tragic character. Willy Loman is a rather pathetic man.
He is perhaps average, almost typical but maybe too stereotypical. His life had always been dysfunctional and all he ever wanted was to make something of himself. At least
that is how it appears on the surface, but wanting to make something of ones self truly, or just going through the motions are two different things. Willy sincerely wants
success, but it is for the wrong reasons. His ego is huge. It is not as if he wants to do well so he and his family will have more
