concerned with assessing events in the past through studying the composition and formation of trees and their growth processes, as affected by environmental changes. The technique was originally developed by
Douglass, at the University of Arizona in the early twentieth century. In its most basic form, it studies the effect of climatic change on the formation of tree rings, with
differently sized rings being produced according to the dryness of the year.
Trees add a layer of wood to their trunks each year, which gives rise to the annual rings which can be seen when the trunk is
cross-sectioned. The new wood arises from the cambium layer, which separates the old wood from the outer bark. The first new cells which are produced are laid down in the
spring, when it is damp, and as the year progresses and the weather becomes drier, the cambium cells become progressively smaller until growth stops altogether during autumn and winter. It
is the pattern of differently-sized cells which forms the distinctive "ring" structure each year.
There are various environmental factors which will affect the type, size and pattern of the ring cells, and these will vary depending on the species
of tree, the kind of environmental history which has affected it, and so on. Some trees will almost invariably lay down the same pattern no matter what the conditions which
surround it, whereas others will show a great deal of variation in the patterns, indicative of climatic and other conditions which occurred during that particular year.
