This paper discusses the book "The Unredeemed Captive" and why it was so vital to the Puritans that Eunice Williams be "redeemed." Discussion John Demos is an historian and his book is an account of the complex relationships among the earliest colonists, Native Americans, the French, the Jesuits and others who were seeking their fortune in the New World. He avoids the easy "Indians villains-settlers good guys" mindset and instead shows just how interwoven daily life was. The Native Americans capture all of Eunices family and marched them to Canada; her mother died along the way but all of Eunices surviving siblings, and her father, were returned ("redeemed") to Deerfield. Eunice chose to stay with her captors, an action which appalled her father and brother, who kept returning to Canada, begging her to come back with them (Demos, 1995). She never did but remained with her Native American husband and his people until she died (Demos, 1995). Why would this have so dismayed the Puritans? For one thing, the missionaries who came to the region were Jesuits (Society of Jesus)-Roman Catholics. Their skill at converting the Natives and bringing new people into the faith was unsurpassed. But the Puritans had come to the New World to escape religion (Catholic) persecution and to discover that they had to face Catholicism once again must have been very difficult to deal with. This would be a particularly difficult challenge for people who felt such disgust for the Church that they decided they had no choice but to leave England to avoid religious persecution.
