Discussion The Childrens Hospital of Philadelphia is the oldest pediatric hospital in the United States, founded in 1855 (About Childrens Hospital, 2007). It is a research establishment as well as
a hospital, and was one of the first hospitals in the U.S. "to recognize the importance of treating all aspects of the patient, including emotional well-being and that of the
childs family" (About Childrens Hospital, 2007). It educates families so that they become "partners in their childrens care" (About Childrens Hospital, 2007). The hospital has 430 beds and experienced over
one million visits, both inpatient and outpatient, in 2006 (About Childrens Hospital, 2007). The hospital is located at 34th Street and Civic Center Boulevard, Philadelphia, PA 19104 and is adjacent
to the campus of the University of Pennsylvania; this section of town is called "University City" (About Childrens Hospital, 2007). The hospital is undergoing a massive expansion that will nearly
double its size; completion is slated for 2010 (Building for the future, 2007). The project costs $1.1 billion and will add 1.2 million square feet to the hospitals main campus
(Building for the future, 2007). The hospital also plans "additional development on the grounds of the former Philadelphia Civic Center" (Building for the future, 2007). This comment begs the question,
what happened to the civic center, and does it have anything to do with the demographics of the area? With the hospital as its center, a circle with an eight-mile
radius takes in most of the downtown Philadelphia area, and crosses the Delaware River to include the community of Camden, New Jersey. In order to find out detailed information, the
