thinkers. POLITICAL CULTURES Were political machines good or bad for America? That is a question that cannot be answered merely upon speculation. Indeed, it would depend upon
which side of the fence one stood as to whether or not political machines proved detrimental or not. The answer from an immigrant would likely be that they were
the saving grace for a person who had nothing whatsoever to lose in order to secure their American freedom; however, the manner by which it was bad for the country
was the way it severely compromised Americas political integrity. The average American was blind to the political machines influence; they were unable to understand the inconsistency that clearly existed
between corporate and government interests. "When bribery did occur, the bribed politicians were blamed, not the system" (Troy 14). Another aspect of American liberalism came in the form of
creating an economic system that was fair to all and potentially lucrative enough to encourage all individuals to become involved with commerce. Only by this cooperative method could the
economy grow strong and continue to flourish. Unfortunately, however, it had been throughout that part of the century that this idea suffered various forms of exploitation, effectively serving to
