interrelated factors. Numerous scholars have written about democratic citizenship and each work is framed by the circumstances and situations which the particular scholar has confronted in their own life.
To form a personal theory of democratic citizenship which is applicable in broad terms to all people and circumstances, therefore, it is prudent to turn to the work of
those that have preceded us. Of particular benefit is the classic works of Alex Tocqueville, and W.E.B. DuBois. Contemporary scholars offer positive input in this task as well,
however. These scholars include John Rawls, Kenneth M. Dolbeare, Seyla Benhabib, and William E. Connolly. Dolbeare (1989) emphasizes the importance of balancing
such values as life and liberty against such concepts as the pursuit of happiness, privacy, and free enterprise. What we find when we examine history, however, is that this
balance has changed considerable according to a number of factors, one being race. Benhabib (1996) recognizes that democratic citizenship in the last couple of decades in particular has bee
directly impacted by "identity/difference". The old differences which characterized the early years of our history are once again beginning to come to a head. To understand those differences
it is instructive to look at writing from the early years of our history. Tocqueville and W.E.B. DuBois, for example, frame the circumstances impacting democratic citizenship for minorities in America.
At the same time, however, these authors emphasize the importance of democratic principles across races and across other socioeconomic dividers. Blacks and other minorities in the early history
of this country were subjected to all sorts of injustices yet somehow they managed not only to survive but to become positive contributors to our democratic society. They did
