once democracy is in place, there is a complete overhaul of the past, that the new paradigm is perfect and that the future will be dynamic. The truth is that
while the future is something that will likely be more positive than past autocracies, the present is in turmoil. Democratization, as Rustow (1970) points out is often entrenched in chaos.
One may want to compare this way of thinking with the current situation in Iraq. There is much criticized about the war. People believe that the people were happy before.
Stories vary. Some say that the Iraqi people are ecstatic to have the U.S. involved and creating a democracy, something much better than the Saddam Hussein regime. They point
out that he had killed many family members. Hence, they realize that democracy will take time, but they are generally pleased. Of course, there are also reports that show the
opposite attitude. The people, from the outset, were entrenched in a crumbled infrastructure. It would take time to rebuild and they lost a lot. Lives were lost in the struggle.
Some do not think it was worth it. In understanding democracy and the process of democratization, Rustows (1970) work is helpful. The transition can be difficult. This was seen
in Russia as well. It seems that every communist country, that did not have the economic base for that type of government and decides to try democracy, is challenged. There
