Duvalier of Haiti and differed even further from that of Chiles Augusto Pinochet. While liberalism, democracy, and socialism each celebrates the individual in the idea that the right collective of
individuals can ultimately serve as the means by which the larger group grows and prospers, a dictatorship celebrates only the accomplishments and power of one individual.
Under the appearance of propriety or the auspices of empowerment for the populace, as well as the support of individual bases for power, clearly the individual
is usurped and has a minimal level of personal power or influence. The logical outcome of such an organization is the creation of a reality that eliminates a larger
freedom through the dictates of the collective. The process taken just one step further then allows for and justifies the establishment of the one person who ultimately evolves into
a position that can only be described as dictatorship. As the 20th century closes, more people live under democratic rule than under dictatorship
at the end of the 20th century. According to Soares (1999), this demonstrates a significant and collective movement as there were only 12 democratic nations in the world in 1941.
However, democracy faces constant challenges to its sustainability. These challenges include new types of racism, ethnic conflicts and social divisions. Nationally-based representative systems also face challenges posed by the internet
and by increasing globalization. Soares (1999) points out that those who proclaim themselves as upholders of democracy should face up to these challenges and ensure that democracy grows stronger because
