been embraced for some time. At the same time, there are both benefits and deficiencies of democracy and everyone has his or her own take on the subject. First,
it is important to explore democracy in order to find out why it is so coveted. What is democracy exactly? Democracy is generally thought to be the rule
by the people, but it is recognized that the people cannot rule directly. Thus, representatives from around a nation, such as the United States, are chosen to represent the various
states. Hence, the American system for example, is a representative democracy. In the American system, rather than have a direct election of the president, the people elect candidates to
determine which electors will vote for the president. Although almost always they will vote for the particular party candidate, they have the option to do what they want. Thus, this
representative democracy that supports an electoral system is a rather complex design and it is not a direct democracy, but even Athenian democracy had its limitations. In examining the views
of various philosophers, the positive and negative aspects of democracy will be revealed. Thucydides seemed to see democracy as something to strive for, but for which there were certainly problems.
People too easily give up on it. In his work entitled The History of the Peloponnesian War there are several quotes that seem to support his point of view. For
example, Thucydides writes: "Some persons crossed over from Samos and had an interview with Alcibiades, who immediately offered to make first Tissaphernes, and afterwards the King, their friend, if
they would give up the democracy and make it possible for the King to trust them. " One can see that to this author, democracy was important but it was
