seen as a system of government that is fair and offers a great deal of freedom as well as equality. The following paper examines what democracy is and what it
means in contemporary politics and government today. Democracy As mentioned, most people, especially people in the United States, presume to know what democracy means, historically as well as
contemporarily. One author notes, however, "Democracy may be a word familiar to most, but it is a concept still misunderstood and misused in a time when totalitarian regimes and military
dictatorships alike have attempted to claim popular support by pinning democratic labels upon themselves" (The U.S. Department of States Bureau of International Information Programs).
According to this same author/organization the dictionary indicates that democracy means that the government is essentially governed by the people, the citizens, and the supreme power of a
nation is ruled over by the people (The U.S. Department of States Bureau of International Information Programs). It also means that the people essentially elect officials to be their voice
(The U.S. Department of States Bureau of International Information Programs). Or, as Abraham Lincoln is famous for noting, a democracy is a government that is "of the people, by the
people, and for the people" (The U.S. Department of States Bureau of International Information Programs). In relationship to freedom and equality it appears as though democracy and freedom, and so
