STORY As related in Greek mythology, the earth once had an unending season of temperate weather (Leeming). There were no seasons. The entire year was had a temperate
climate and the plant life was always green and the flowers were always in bloom. At this time, the world was full of beauty. The crops were plentiful
and humans had plenty of everything. Demeter was the goddess who was responsible for the plentiful bounty of the earth. Demeter was also known as the goddess of the
grain and the harvest (Leeming). Demeters daughter was known as the Maiden of Spring, and was named Persephone. She was the pride of her mother and it was Demeters love
for her daughter that kept the trees green and the flowers in bloom (Leeming). Mother and daughter spent nearly all their time together, but once in a while Persephone would
wander away from her mother while picking flowers. The Lord of the Underworld, Hades, was watching the lovely maiden one day when Eros the mischievous god of love, shot
an arrow and it landed directly in Hades heart (Forebel). Hades fell in love with Persephone and insisted that she marry him and become his queen of the Underworld.
Hades opened the ground next to the maiden and Hades came forth from the ground and seized Persephone (Forebell). He then returned to the underworld. When the journey
ended, Persephone found herself in the underworld away from the beauty of the world. Demeter was unable to find her daughter even though she had heard her dauther cry
