acquired decline in memory and thinking (cognition) due to brain disease that results in significant impairment of personal, social or occupational function" (Draper, 2004, p. 1). Since the onset
of dementia is typically gradual but progressive, the guidelines of the World Health Organization advocate that symptoms must be in evidence for a period of at least six months before
a definitive diagnosis can be issued (Draper, 2004). There are four main types of dementia. First and most common is Alzheimers disease, named for German neurologist Alois Alzheimer,
which is a degenerative neurological disorder that represents 50 to 60 percent of all incidences of dementia, with a projected lifespan of anywhere between eight and 20 years (Draper, 2004,
p. 6; Winer, 2000). Next, there is vascular dementia, which accounts for 15-20 percent of all cases (Draper, 2006, p. 6). Research indicates that dementia with Lewy bodies
(DLB) represents nearly 20 percent of dementia cases, but this statistic may be deceptive in that many of these patients also suffer from Alzheimers disease (Draper, 2004). Finally, there
is frontotemporal dementia, which describes several types of degenerative neurological disorders including Picks disease, and accounts for about 10 percent of dementia instances that affects both genders of younger age
groups (Draper, 2004, p. 82). Etiology Alzheimers disease is age-related, and occurs when abnormal beta-amyloid and tau proteins in the brain become clustered together over a period of years (Draper,
2004, p. 78). This progressive onset results in dysfunction of neurons and the gradual death of the cell clumps (Draper, 2004). Vascular dementia can have either single or
multiple causes (Draper, 2004). The primary causes are: * Hemodynamic disorders (blood flow to the brain as occurs in strokes); * Thromboembolism (blood clots from the heart or
