of disease, not the least of which is that of dementia. II. EPIDEMIOLOGY Dementia is a mental condition that impairs the cognitive process. Identified by disorientation, memory loss
and lapses of attention, dementia strikes the elderly and makes it very difficult for those who live on their own to safely take care of themselves. The decline in
mental capacity is noted most obviously with the inability to carry out otherwise simple, daily functions such as operating the toaster or getting dressed; impeded intellectual functioning is noticed by
the inability to remember certain things, make appropriate judgment decisions and assemble coherent thoughts; emotional control is overrun by extreme reactions like apathy or agitation; and the combined presence of
dysphasia and dyspraxia (speech/comprehension and task management) (Reed Health Communications, 2005). Dementia occurs within the scope of three categories: Alzheimers disease, vascular dementia (VaD) and lewy body dementia (LBD).
A full fifty percent of all dementia cases are classified as Alzheimers, which is abnormal protein accumulation between nerve cells. Because Alzheimers strikes first in the medial temporal lobe,
memory recall, confusion and forgetfulness are typically the first identifiable symptoms of dementia (Reed Health Communications, 2005). Vascular dementia is cited in approximately twenty percent of all dementia cases, which
is caused by oxygen depletion of the brain. Damaged blood vessels cannot transport an adequate amount of blood to the brain cells and can readily instigate stroke. A
