increase, reaching $55,908 million in 2006 up from 49,205 in 2005 but the actual revenue per customer is falling and profit margins, gross, operating and earnings before tax are
all falling (Morningstar.com, 2007). In many markets there have been dramatic decreases in sales, in the financial quarter results (quarter ending 2nd Feb 2007) Dell were reporting a 5%
decrease in sales on the year on year figures, while there are increases in the operating expenses, which are now 11.6% of sales compared to 9.6% a year ago (Lee,
2007). This is presenting a major problem for Dell, the company has used differentiation, but with the costs increasing as a proportion of sales it appears that there is
a lost of some of the benefits of economies of scales and that marginal costs and costs per unit are increasing. Wall Street is also speculating that there will need
to be streamlining and significant job cuts in order to constrain costs. The immediate areas of concern are the employee levels which increased 49% over two years, well ahead of
sales level increases (Byrnes et al, 2007). Therefore, the main problems for Dell are that the loss of sales are increasing the costs per unit (or reducing the contribution
per unit), which will mean cost cutting will have to take place and include probable redundancies, as well as the fall in profit levels. This in turn creates a negative
cycle, as more speculation takes place regarding the reasons for the falls there are increasing numbers of press articles that help add fuel to the fire, creating a self fulfilling
