Dell is a computer company, which retails and sell computers direct to the public and industry. Dell was founded in 1984 by the leader character in the company, Michael
Dell. At this time the company was called PCs Ltd and only changed its name in 1988 when there was a public stock offering (Pearlson and Yeh, 1999). The position
of Dell is very strong, their market position is number one in the United States, and on a global level was number two until recently when it gained the number
one position in 2001 for both servers and computers as a whole (Dell Annual Report, 2004). The most profitable current segments of the market can be seen geographically in the
United States where it has an established marketplace and the name is well known due to its longer presence as well as higher market advertising presence.
Ten years ago the position was not the same, the position at that stage was twenty-fifth in the country (Dell Annual Report, 2000). This company has
achieved some amazing results, by 2000 the company was selling $50 million a day through the internet (Dell Annual Report, 2000). There are many factors which influence this change in
revenue and profit, economic factors can effect the industry in general or can be seen as being specifically influential on a single organisation. It is the way that Dell has
