reason or another and there have been numerous theories as to why this is a reality. Many argue that punishment is a good determent against delinquent behavior, though many studies
indicate that punishment does not deter criminals from their behavior. The following paper examines whether or not delinquent behavior can be deterred through threat of punishment, and if not what
approach could prove successful. Delinquent Behavior According to one particular author, who discusses many of the theories regarding criminal behavior, "research regarding deterrence and capital punishment" indicates that
capital punishment has not proved to be successful in deterring criminal activity and that "Murder rates rise immediately following capital punishment" (An Overview of Criminological Theories, 2005). The reasoning is
said to be that if it is acceptable for the government to kill people then it is acceptable for citizens to kill as well (An Overview of Criminological Theories, 2005).
We have heard a great deal about many different programs that are supposed to deter adolescents from criminal behavior. There is the scared straight approach which shows kids what
life in prison could be like. There are juvenile facilities, such as ranches, designed to teach children better approaches to their problems. There is also juvenile hall, where children seem
to learn how to be even better criminals. In essence, while some programs may work for some delinquents, the majority of delinquents do not change for the better through punishment,
and punishment does not seem to be a deterrent. One author tells us, and perhaps correctly so, that addressing delinquent behavior is multi-faceted. This author notes the following: "Many
