has the primary character experiencing college life and living through the 1970s when people like to act as though they were something different than who they really were, exploring their
individuality and often coming across as quite ridiculous. Orozcos work ridicules, in a funny and sarcastic manner, the education system and the society within higher education. The following paper examines
Orozcos work and the satire within "Delano." Delano As indicated in the introduction, Orozcos work pokes fun at the institution of higher education. He does this in many
ways, and perhaps primarily through the students. In poking fun at the students, however, he is not just making a comment on higher education but also on the American society
and how so many people in America like to pretend they are something else. He pokes fun at people who like to assume they are environmentally conscious, for example, through
the character of Alice who presents herself as a health nut, a person who feels all food should be healthy, because it is seen as different from the normal America.
It is not because she really has a cause, but because she thinks she has a cause and she wants to be different. In essence, he pokes fun at people
who are presenting themselves as something other than who they are. While they may be people exploring their individuality, the foolishness of the people comes out through Orozcos ability to
present the individuals as funny in their "intelligent" growth. We know, through his writing style, that they will really just become boring average individuals when they actually do grow up.
In doing this Orozco is criticizing the lost and fake nature of many of the American people. He is showing the reader how many Americans may like to pretend
