intelligence is an asset and that more of any such asset would naturally be a good thing, Keyes novel meaningfully examines the detriments inherent in artificially increased intelligence through the
figure of the novels protagonist, Charlie Gordon. As such, the question of intelligences value to humanity is impartially considered, and one is left to wonder, if he had it all
to do over again, would Charlie still volunteer to have his intelligence artificially increased? This paragraph presents a brief summary of the text. Charlie begins the novel as a
mentally retarded adult in his thirties, who is employed at a New York City bakery and also enrolled in literacy classes for developmentally disabled adults. His teacher, Alice, recognizes a
desire for learning in him and recommends him for an experimental treatment in artificially enhancing intelligence being led by her superior, Dr. Nemur. As a result of the experiments, Charlies
intelligence is indeed enhanced, but this has some negative aspects. For instance, Charlie becomes aware of the extent to which people he thought of as his friends were merely teasing
him because of his retardation, and later on, he even begins to suffer isolation for his increased intelligence, just as he did for his diminished intelligence. The major problem
faced by Charlie is the improved perspective he gains of himself and his place in society. While he had previously thought of his co-workers at the bakery as being his
friends, after the operation, Charlie comes to realize that theyve been making fun of him, and that the people in his life who were legitimately kind to him were usually
