of an important part of the environment. The deforestation of the Amazon rainforest, however, has also meant jobs and profit for the people of the area. This is
quite a conundrum, which has no easy answers. According to Pfaff (1999), an examination was made of why the rainforests of Brazil are
being cut down. Satellite and socioeconomic data were used. This was done in order to determine whether public policies affect the rate of deforestation of the rainforests.
Pfaff (1999) said, "The findings reveal the significance of several factors, including land characteristics such as vegetation density and soil quality, and transport cost factors such as distance to primary
markets and county roads" (Pfaff, 1999, 26). According to Turcq, et al (1998), in the history of the rainforests of the Amazon, fires
