to the Caribbean and the Voodoo religion. There are commonalities that may be see in all areas where an individual may carry this title, despite the differences that may also
be seen. A spiritual specialist is someone that is able to walk between the worlds someone that can talk to the spirits and understand their world and the way
that it intersects with this world. In some cultures the spirits that are sought will be the ancestors, this is predominately in areas where there is ancestor worship, including the
North American Indians where ancestors are held in high regard. In other cultures there may be a different approach, such as in
Voodoo, in the Santeria religion the individual will go to a babalawo, who is a high priest of the religion and also fulfils the role of a spiritual specialist, in
order to gain guidance from the Orishas (Ryan, 2001). These are mysterious spiritual deities, in this culture the communication occurs through a system of divination called ocule and is
based on the binary system of ones and zeros (Ryan, 2001). Here the Orishasa are consulted when there is a problem and through the divination they will tell the babalawo
what the root cause of the problem is ands how it may be resolved. Although different in manifestation, this is a similar process
