Basal reading books. Books structured around key words with the belief that this expedites the reading process.
Considered an antiquated approach by modern educators. Fictional or narrative text (trade books). A type of writing style that conveys a story
with the use of specific characters. Sociolinguist Theory. A theory that encapsulates the impact that society has on the way that language
is used. Reggie Routman. Advocates both shaped and guided reading and silent reading in which the child can work through any problems
they encounter indepently of interaction with others. Top-down model of reading-Whole to Parts. An instructional model based on the belief that
readers frame their understanding of words and text around preconceived ideas about what those words and text mean. That of course is dependent on the readers experience base.
This approach is promoted by teorists such as Ken Goodman. Ken Goodman. An advocate of the whole language approach to reading and
a weighty critic of the phonics system of reading instruction. Goodman contends that science has show us better ways of teaching reading than matching letters to sounds.
Phonics Approach. An approach to reading structure that is centered around the child learning a simple alphabetic code consisting of forty-four phonemes that represent
all of the sounds in the English language. The phonics approach concentrates on teaching the child to translate these phonemes into the reading process.
