medicine. CAM exists alongside our conventional Western understanding of medicine and its intent is to act in conjunction with modern medicine to effect better health and welfare. This
is the complimentary aspect of the discipline. There is also the alternative aspect. The alternative aspect of CAM refers to its use in place of modern medical approaches.
In addition to the complimentary and alternative aspects of CAM there is the integrative approach. This approach is in effect a blending of conventional medicine and alternative medicine
or, more specifically, a "combination of conventional medicine and complementary and alternative therapies that have a strong scientific base for use and safety" (Rojas-Cooley and Grant, 2006). CAM therefor
is a multifaceted discipline and one that works both with and outside of the conventional Western construct of medicine. To further clarify the multifaceted nature of CAM, it is helpful
to examine material provided by the National Advisory Council for Complimentary and Alternative Medicine. This organization identifies four major domains within Complimentary Alternative Medicine. These include 1.
biologically based practices, 2. mind-body medicine, 3. energy medicine, and 4. manipulative and body-based practices (National Advisory Council for Complimentary and Alternative Medicine, 2004). In
addition to the four major domains the National Advisory Council for Complimentary and Alternative Medicine (2004) lists overarching approaches that fall within whole medical systems. An example of a
biologically-based CAM might be the use of herbs to effect healing. Chiropractic care and massage would stand as examples of manipulative body-based CAM while meditation would be an example
