social phenomena. These televised comedies capture audiences because of the tendency for people to identify with certain characters. Sitcoms mirror real life and as a consequence we see
ourselves or others that we know in the characters. Sitcoms first made their way into widespread human consciousness in 1950s America with the advent of such shows as "The
Honeymooners" and "I Love Lucy". As innocent as such shows might appear, they were successful because they depicted individuals whose behavior digressed slightly from the norm (Jones, 1992).
Sitcom characters might play very predictable roles but they handle the circumstances of those roles in a slightly different fashion than they would likely be handled by a real life
person handling the same situation. Sitcoms are important, however, because they deliver very real societal messages, messages that are disguised in comedy but at the same time reflective of
the concerns that are confronting us as a society. There are thousands of examples of how sitcom characters always deviate from the norm.
One of the earliest sitcom characters, Lucy (played by Lucille Ball) of "I Love Lucy" captured her audience like few sitcom characters have done since. She did so
because she was in reality presenting the factors that were important in keeping the American woman in her place in American society. In one episode of the show, for
example, Lucy convinced her best friend to get a job alongside her in a chocolate factory. The women quickly learned that working a chocolate candy assembly line is not
all it might appear to be. They are quickly overwhelmed with the quantity and pace of the work and end up in a hilarious situation trying to consume all
