species. Discussion The form of a definition essay is an X, Y structure where if X then Y. In other words, the paper states that the term X stands for
the bald eagle while the term Y is "endangered species." In order to prove that bald eagles (X) are endangered (Y), then X must equal Y; that is, it must
prove that bald eagles are endangered because they fit the definition of Y, endangered species. In order to prove Y is true, three criteria need to be set up stating
definitively that bald eagles are endangered. If the three agree, then Y is true and equals X, and bald eagles are threatened. If no such criteria can be found, then
bald eagles do not fit into the endangered category, X does not equal Y and the eagles are not threatened. First criterion Y: The bald eagle was listed as endangered
on February 14, 1978 in all states except "Minnesota, Wisconsin, Michigan, Oregon and Washington, where it was classified as threatened" ("Pacific Bald Eagle Recovery Plan"). This criteria supports the
proposition X, that the bald eagle is endangered. Second criterion Y: The second criteria is the information from the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service, which provides a species profile of
the Bald eagle (Haliaeetus leucocephalus). The profile indicates the eagle is still threatened in Region 2 (Arizona, Texas, Oklahoma and New Mexico) but is in recovery elsewhere ("Species Profile"). The
