that was responsible for the massive influxes of immigrants throughout the 1800s as people left their homes abroad in order to participate in the booming economic opportunities that characterized the
history of America. However, there is a real sense that the American Dream is something of a misleading ideal, and that the opportunities and equality that supposedly exist in the
United States are not quite as pervasive as the myth would have one believe. Nevertheless, understanding the American Dream is essential to understanding the nation itself, especially in the modern
context when the American Dream is being more frequently utilized as a justification for the continued exceptionalism of the nation and its policies. To be certain, the American Dream is
something that one must carefully qualify, as there are aspects of it that may well hold true, and aspects that are undeniably false; for instance, the American Dream is a
misleading ideal in the sense that the civility and trappings of success in America are largely superficial and illusory and in the sense that opportunities for success are not actually
equally distributed, but the ideal holds true in some sense in that the essential bankruptcy of the American Dream establishes an existential vacuum wherein one can live by ones own
personal values and find an alternative sort of success and freedom. One major way in which one can analyze the real nature of the American Dream is to explore the
