An 11 page paper on, simply, love. For many, love is and remains an enigma for much of their lives. Several researchers have sought to explain aspects of love from various approaches, and all of the world’s leading religions give love a place of honor in individuals’ lives. The purpose here is to review some of the research that has been done in this area and to reflect on findings and personal opinion. Sound and informative research on love exists, but virtually none of it succeeds in gaining any clearer perspective on the “big picture.” From both research and personal perspectives, love remains an enigma, one that deserves greater and more detailed attention. The paper discusses Eros, Ludus, Storge, Pragma, Mania and Agape types of love. Bibliography lists 11 sources.

The purpose here is to review some of the research that has been done in this area and to reflect on findings and personal opinion. Definition Jesus said, "Greater love has no one than this, that he lay down his life for his friends" (John 15:13 NIV). Websters defines love as "unselfish, loyal and benevolent concern for the good of another;" "strong affection for another arising out of kinship or personal ties;" and "attraction based on sexual desire: affection and tenderness felt by lovers," among others. Many people believe that love is something that just turns up when individuals least expect it, that when it arrives it is inevitable and incontrovertible. Some say it is a near-demon possession that drives people to do strange and often unwise things. Some say love is blind, that someone in love will not be able to see the many faults of someone that everyone else rejects as being wholly inferior. Others claim love is for the weak of both mind and spirit, the weak-willed who cannot live their lives alone. Hemfelt, Minirth and Meier (1989) and several other authors report that love is a choice, rather than an emotion. Elliot (1979) agrees, as do a host of others. The Apostle Paul wrote that in the final analysis, "these three remain: faith, hope and love. But the greatest of these is love" (I Corinthians 13:13 NIV). ...
