Quantitative research was "real" and valuable, qualitative research - that seeks to assess individuals thoughts, attitudes and perceptions - was not. Today, practitioners of hard science such as medicine increasingly are acknowledging the influences of things that cannot easily be measured on the process of healing, and increasingly are turning to qualitative methods to help to explain these factors. Much of this recognition has extended to sociology as well. Though sociologists have been aware of the value of sociology all along, others have not. Now, when an inexplicable event occurs, increasingly it is to sociologists that people turn for answers, or at least possibilities. Defining Sociology Hodgson (n.d.) reviews the development of sociology, writing that the term was coined by Compte in 1839. "Durkheim, in his Rules of Sociological Method, defined sociology as the science of institutions" (Hodgson). Each defined sociology "in terms of an object of analysis rather than an analytical approach or method" (Hodgson). Fitzgerald (n.d.) goes into more detail in attempting to define sociology. Sociologys most basic definition is that it is a social science that is "about" people, that it is the study of humanity (Fitzgerald). This is not a definition full enough to address all of the nuances of sociology, however. Saying that sociology is about people and humanity, while correct as far as it goes, does not distinguish it from other disciplines such as psychology or economics.
