constitutes justice and a "just" community. Each paradigm has its roots in history and each one has its staunch defenders. On one side, there are those who believe that the
right path for society is one that works to "liberate the self-reliant individual in one case," while the other side wants to "realize greater solidarity and collected self-management " (Taylor
316). As this implies, there is an ongoing debate concerning the nature of distributive justice. The controversy largely concerns the criteria for standards of justice; i.e. "what constitutes the just
community?" (Taylor 289) In exploring possible answers to this question, the conclusions that come up point toward what John Dewey said over a half a century ago, which is that
a "just" community is one that seeks freedom within a social group, but does so in such a manner that both the individual and the group prosper (147). First
of all, before considering what constitutes justice within a community, it is first necessary to clarify what is meant by the term "community." One elucidating definition points out simply that
