higher education. When we consider the curriculum we may argue that at whatever level this takes place, the course contents should be relevant and applicable in the outside world if
the education is to add value in an economic sense. The content also need to be stimulating and interesting, for example, if
we look at basic skills, in the UK alone it is estimated that seven million adults would benefit from some basic skills education, such as reading, writing or arithmetic (Wells,
1999). The motivation of these people needs to be generated externally rather than internally. If we consider both groups there are similarities, as lessons need to be interesting, engaging, challenging
and relevant but not limiting expression. In many adults they also need to increase self-confidence in order to motivate the individual so that they believe that they can achieve more.
Therefore, content needs to be based on the needs, but presented in a manner that is relevant. The contents will also need
to be put together according to the needs of the class that is being taught. There has also been evidence that the individuals who need only minor improvements may also
be motivated by knowledge that they can gain a nationally recognised test to prove their abilities. This means including a nationally recognised qualification. This means that in seeing the standard
