Additionally, when the modern Christian reads of the opposition that the apostles encountered from Jewish authorities, there is a tendency to cast these ancient officials as the "bad" guys in
the biblical story. However, consider for a moment what it would be like if God had chosen to postpone the sacrifice of Christ for those two millennia. Imagine the
reaction of the typical conservative citizen if, suddenly, a new religious sect sprang up-one that appeared to "break the laws" of previous belief. Now, also imagine that reaction is further
compounded by the fact that this new sect wants people to worship a man--someone who seems highly unlikely to be cast in such a role-say, a simple construction worker from
Newark, for instance. The natural reaction would be consternation at the "heresy" of such goings-on. This, in essence, is the situation that confronted the Jews of Pauls era. It
is difficult for the current day Christian to think in these terms. Nevertheless, Christianity was definitely considered to be a "cult" by conservative Jewish people of that era. It is
easy to see why this should be so if one merely stops, and considers their perspective. For time out of mind, a covenant had existed between God and his
Chosen People. This covenant encompassed certain rituals and rites that represented this bond. These rituals-such as circumcision and dietary restrictions-- represented in solid, earthly form the spiritual relationship between God
and Man. By keeping these rituals and rites, the children of Israel maintained their covenant with the Almighty and enjoyed the favor of God as his Chosen People. Now
comes a "new" religion, offering a new covenant, and-according to this person, Paul--the old ways no longer apply. According to Paul, an unholy, uncircumcised man could worship as an
