problem and come up with solutions. This may involve brainstorming, or it could simply be aligned with the recognition of a problem, and a realization that at some point, a
decision will need to be made. Yet, many times, situations are not in the control of the individual whom the situation affects. For example, someone may have test anxiety. They
are afraid that they will fail a test and worry about it. It causes them perhaps to lose sleep, or overeat, or drink too much. When the day of the
test comes, they may be out of sorts, and the worry may even hinder full concentration. A better way to deal with it is perhaps to focus on something else
to change ones mood and then take the test in a less anxious mode. Some people take prescribed mediation for anxiety instead. Of course, other situations are more amenable
to a direct approach. Ones car breaks down and they are upset because they have to get to work. They should simply deal with the situation by calling the tow

obstacles means that one is able to come to terms with their difficulties to minimize their impact (Frager & Fadiman, 2005). They approach each part of a problem, resolve it
with little complaint, and move on to the next thing. The other way to handle anxiety is by either denying or distorting a situation with the use of defense mechanisms
(Frager & Fadiman, 2005). There are a variety of defense mechanisms and eight of these, based on Anna Freuds ideas, are repression, denial, rationalization, reaction formation, projection,
