unusual. The word "defamiliarize" means to make unfamiliar; to take an ordinary object and make it strange. The term is almost always used in connection with artistic or literary works;
the Literary Encyclopedia says: "it was an essential part of the art-work to defamiliarise the conventions used in making previous art, in order to make the reader (or viewer or
hearer) more conscious of the artistic processes involved , and hence to refresh our perception of the world" (Editors). Another source says that "the Russian Formalist Viktor Shklovsky defined
the primary function of art as ostranenie - defamiliarization - of objects" (Remsen). Looking at art in this way allows one to see a "new concept of literary history" that
sees it as a "series of abrupt discontinuities ... [and] ruptures with the past" (Remsen). This has the effect of making art new and fresh, but when applied to life,
it "leads to a defamiliarization from ones own experiences and emotions" (Remsen). It makes a person think about what hes doing, which is precisely what we want. How might this
apply to pants? There are a number of things that might be done, both to the pants themselves and then to the way one approaches wearing them. If the object
is to make them seem unfamiliar, then perhaps they could be decorated: painted, covered with rhinestones, or perhaps patched. Since there is a fad for ripped jeans, the student might
