2009). In 1843, John Deere and Leonard Andrew became partners in "the art and trade of blacksmithing, plow-making and all things thereto..." (Deere & Company, History, 2009). As business increased,
they took on other partners and formed John Deere & Company (Deere & Company, History, 2009). In 1890, two separate individuals, Benjamin Hold and Daniel Best were each experimenting with
steam tractors, trying to create one that would work (Caterpillar, History, 2009). Holt was able to develop the first steam tractor in 1904 and the first gas tractor in 1906
(Caterpillar, History, 2009). In 1925, the two companies, Holt Manufacturing and C.L. Best Tractor, merged to form Caterpillar Tractor Company (Caterpillar, History, 2009). The newly formed company released the first
diesel tractor in 1931 (Caterpillar, History, 2009). Both companies are now huge conglomerates offering many different diverse products as well as varied services. Both also work in several different industries.

expanded across the United States and across the globe over the centuries and decades. Caterpillars last fiscal years (2007) sales were (mil) $44,958.0 (Cummings, 2009) and Deeres last fiscal year
